To draw this Alaskan Malamute Dog step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a big circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for the front part of the Alaskan Malamute dog's body. To draw the circle, make four marks to determine height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a bottle cap. Step 2: To the left, draw another circle as a guide for the back portion of the Malamute's body. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle too. This circle should be a bit smaller than the first one. Don't draw the circles too far apart or the dog's body will be too long.

Step 3: On the top, right side, draw an even smaller circle as a guide for the Alaskan Malamute dog's head. This circle should be about one-fourth the size of the first circle, and the circles' edges should touch.

Step 4: On the lower, right side of the head, make a small mark for the first part of the guide for the muzzle. Connect the mark to the head using longer, curved lines to finish the arc-like guide for the Malamute's muzzle. On top of the head, draw a small, triangular shape as a guide for the ear.

Step 5: Under the first circle, draw a long, vertical line as a guide for the dog's first front leg. Bend the line at the top and bottom for the joints. Draw another long line under the circle on the left for the hind leg. The guide for the hind leg should slope to the left first and then angle downward. Bend the bottom for the Malamute's foot.

Step 6: Draw two long, sloping lines that connect the head to the body to create the guide for the neck. Connect the circles in the middle using two long lines to finish the guide for the Alaskan Malamute dog's torso. On top of the circle on the left, draw a line that curves to the right and onto the body as a guide for the tail.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 7: Inside the head, near the top of the muzzle, lightly sketch a small circle for the eyeball. When you get the size and position right, darken the shape. Use an angled line on the left side of the outer eye. Darken the right side of the dog's eyeball. Add a small line on the lower, right side for the corner of the eye. Add a few short strokes on the lower, right side for detail on the Alaskan Malamute dog's fur. Inside the eye, draw a thin, long dot for the pupil. Above the eye add more short strokes for more fur.

Step 8: Lightly sketch a small circle on the tip of the Malamute's muzzle for the nose. When you get the shape right, darken the right side but make the line a bit more angular. Inside the nose, draw a curved line that's similar in shape to the letter V for the nostril. Use short strokes along the top of the nose for fur. Make the bottom thin and pointy.

Step 9: Under the nose, draw a line that curves to the left for the mouth. The Alaskan Malamute dog's mouth should stretch to the left all the way to the edge of the initial head circle. Use short strokes as you draw the mouth line for a furry texture. Under the mouth, near the left side, draw a couple of wide, curved lines for the dog's lower lip drooping down. Draw a series of short strokes along the lower edge of the initial arc to create the furry lower jaw. Draw a sloping line along the top edge of the initial arc to complete the shape of the dog's muzzle.

Step 10: Darken the triangular shape on top of the head to create the Alaskan Malamute dog's first ear. Make the bottom of the ear longer so that it stretches into the head. Add a curved line at the bottom for the base. Draw a series of strokes within the shape for the edge of the ear and the furry ear opening. To the right, draw a smaller, thinner triangular shape for the other ear. Use the Malamute's first ear as a template. Use short strokes on the right side for fur. Add a line inside for the edge of the ear.

Step 11: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the Malamute dog's head. Draw a series of strokes along the top, right edge for the front of the head. Add some strokes at the bottom for the neck. To the left of the ears, draw short strokes along the edge of the circle and the guide for the neck. Add a few more short strokes inside the Alaskan Malamute dog's head for extra detail on the fur.

Step 12: Use the line that's under the body on the right side as a guide to draw the dog's first front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. When you get the shape of the leg right, darken the lines. Use short strokes along the left side for fur. Make the top of the leg wide and then gradually make the shape narrower toward the bottom. The bottom part should bulge outward for the foot. Add a couple of short, curved lines inside the foot for the toes. Darken the right side of the leg but don't use short strokes this time.

Step 13: To the right, draw a similar shape for the front leg that's on the other side of the body. Use the Alaskan Malamute dog's first leg as a template as you draw this leg. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape right. Only the front part of this leg will be visible. Place it a bit higher than the first leg, and add the dog's toes at the bottom.

Step 14: Use the angled line to the left as a guide to draw the Malamute's first hind leg. Draw this leg the same way as the front leg. Lightly sketch the shape of the leg around the guide. The top of this leg should be wider at the top than the front leg. It should also bend near the middle for the joint. When you get the shape right, darken the leg using short strokes along the left side. Curve the bottom of the shape to the right for the dog's foot. Add a couple of curved lines inside the foot for the toes. Darken the right side of the leg using shorter strokes and curve the line to make the leg wider at the top.

Step 15: To the right, draw a similar shape for the hind leg that's on the other side of the Malamute's body. Use the first hind leg as a template to draw this leg. Draw it a little bit higher than the first hind leg. The dog's first hind leg will be blocking a big part of this leg, so only draw the portion that's visible from this angle.

Step 16: Use the curved line on the top, left side of the body as a guide to draw the Alaskan Malamute dog's tail. Draw a series of short strokes around the guide to create the tail. The tip of the tail should overlap the body. The orientation of the strokes should turn at the top. Make the shape of the dog's tail thick. Use smoother lines on the bottom edge.

Step 17: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guide to draw the rest of the Malamute's body. Use short strokes along the outer edges of the guides to create the furry body. Use longer strokes along the underside. The longer you draw the strokes, the shaggier the dog's fur will be. Don't overlap the tail and the legs that are on this side of the body.

Step 18: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your Alaskan Malamute dog drawing for extra detail on the fur pattern. Using short strokes, draw a series of curved line around the head to separate the white face from the darker body. The line should go farther to the right along the cheek. Use strokes of a darker value to shade the back of the head. Leave and area around the dog's ears blank. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Shade the body and separate each individual stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through for a furry texture. Shade lightly at first, and then gradually build up to darker values. Use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Leave the underside, the legs and the tail blank. Alternate between a dark and medium value inside the Malamute's body. Shading can be time-consuming so be patient and take breaks. Add strokes with a light value along the white sections for shadows to give the figure more volume and dimension. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it.

Some Alaskan Malamutes are white. For a white dog, skip the value on the body and just add some shadows. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for an accurate depiction of an Alaskan Malamute. If you have a pet Malamute or a similar breed, try to duplicate its coat markings on your drawing. Use a medium value to add a cast shadow underneath and ground the dog. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
