The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a big circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for the front part of the mountain goat's body. To draw the circle, make four marks to determine height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a bottle cap. Step 2: To the right, draw a smaller circle as a guide for the back portion of the body. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle too. Make the circle a bit thinner than its height. This circle should be about two-thirds the size of the first circle. The edges of the circles should touch. On the top, right side of the first circle, draw a third circle as a guide for the mountain goat's head. Pay attention to the size of this circle. It should be very small compared to the first circle.

Step 3: On the lower, right side of the head, draw an arc that's similar to a tilted letter U as a guide for the muzzle. Don't make the mountain goat's muzzle too long. On the top, right side of the head, draw a very small arc as a guide for the ear. To the right of the ear, draw two short, curved lines as guides for the horns.

Step 4: Under the first circle, draw two long, vertical lines as guides for the mountain goat's front legs. The lines should be almost as long as the height of the circle. Bend the bottoms of the lines to indicate the joints.

Step 5: Under the circle on the left, draw a line that angles to the left and then angles back down for the hind leg. To the right, draw another angled line for the mountain goat's other hind leg. Pay attention to how and where the lines bend.

Step 6: Draw two short lines that connect the head to the body and form the guide for the neck. Connect the circles in the middle using two more curved lines to finish the guide for the torso. On the top, left side of the body, draw a line that curves downward as a guide for the mountain goat's tail.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 7: Near the middle of the head, lightly sketch a small oval for the eye. When you get the size and position right, darken the oval but make the sides a bit pointier. Inside the eye, off to the side, draw a tiny circle for a highlight. In the middle, draw an oval and shade it in for the pupil. Shade in the rest of the mountain goat's eye using a value that's lighter than the pupil. Don't overlap the highlight circle. Add a couple of curved lines above and below the eye for eyelids. To the right of the goat's eye, draw a series of short strokes for fur.

Step 8: Inside the muzzle, near the bottom, lightly sketch a small, rectangular shape for the mountain goat's nose. When you get the size and position right, darken the lower half but make the corners rounder the bottom pointier. Use tiny, short strokes to darken the top edge for the fur. Inside the nose, draw two short, curved lines for the nostrils.

Step 9: Under the nose, draw a line that curves to the left for the first half of the mouth. Don't make this line too long. To the right draw a shorter curved line for the other half of the mouth. Curve this line up toward the nose for the front part of the mountain goat's muzzle. Follow the basic edge of the initial arc to draw the top part of the muzzle. Draw a series of short strokes along the curvature of the initial arc to create the goat's furry chin.

Step 10: Darken the curved line on the top, left side of the head for the first part of the mountain goat's horn. Draw another curved line to the right to make the horn thicker. Make the tip pointy and the bottom wide. Close the shape at the bottom. Use the line on the right as a guide to draw the other horn the same way. Darken the guide and add a curved line to the right to make the horn thicker. Close the shape at the bottom.

Step 11: Darken the arc to the left of the horns for the ear but make the top part pointier. Stretch the bottom of the ear into the head. Add a curved line across the middle for the ear opening. Draw a series of short strokes within the shape for the fur found inside the ear. To the right of the mountain goat's horns, draw another small, pointy, arc-like shape with furry strokes inside for the other ear.

Step 12: Darken the top, right side of the initial circle but make the line more angular for the front of the head. Connect the head to the muzzle. Behind the mountain goat's horns, draw a series of short strokes for the furry top of the head. Draw a few short, curved lines around the eye to emphasize the bony brow. Add a few short strokes along the path of the initial arc at the bottom for the base of the goat's beard. Far down below the initial arc, draw a series of short strokes for the tips of the long beard. Add the strokes in a wavy pattern. The farther down you draw the strokes, the longer the beard will be.

Step 13: Use the second line from the right as a guide to draw the mountain goat's first front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. When you get the shape of the leg right, darken the lines. Use short strokes at the top for fur. The shape of the leg should be wide at the top and gradually get thinner toward the bottom. Bend the bottom of the shape to indicate where the joint and top of the foot are. Draw a square like-shape at the bottom for the goat's hoof. Add a line across the shape to split the hoof.

Step 14: Use the angled line on the far left side as a guide to draw the hind leg the same way. Lightly sketch the shape of the mountain goat's leg around the guide. Bend the shape for the joints. The top of the leg should be very wide. When you get the shape of the leg right, darken the lines using short strokes for the fur. The bottom of the leg should be thin. Add the blocky hoof at the bottom and split it in half with a short line.

Step 15: Draw the shape of the other front leg around the guide on the far right side. Only part of this leg will be visible. Draw the square-like hoof at the bottom and part of the wider furry top part. Draw the visible portion of the mountain goat's other hind leg around the last angled line under the body on the left side. A big part of this leg is behind the first hind leg, so only draw the lower half and the blocky hoof at the bottom.

Step 16: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the mountain goat's body. Draw a series of short strokes along the outer edges of the guides to create the woolly texture of the body. Use longer strokes along the underside of the body. The longer the strokes, the longer the wool. Darken the line on the left for the goat's tail. Add strokes along the bottom to make the shape thicker.

Step 17: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your mountain goat drawing. Use a dark value for the horns but leave a thin strip blank for shine. Use a dark value for the ears and nose. Use a light value all over the body to create shadows on the white wool. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Separate each individual stroke a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates more texture. Use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur, which is vertical. Darken the shadows a bit. Shade lightly at first, and then gradually build up to darker values. Use a dark value for the hooves. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for an accurate depiction of a mountain goat. Shading can be time-consuming so be patient and take breaks. Add a cast shadow underneath to ground the goat. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
