To draw a ferret, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause after each step to work at your own pace. You may find it easier to use the step-by-step drawings underneath the video. The new lines in each step are highlighted in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and utilize both methods. Take your time and sketch at your own pace.

Materials You’ll Need

Before starting, gather these basic drawing supplies:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Start with Simple Lines and Shapes

Draw Ferret 1

Step 1: Draw two circles as guides for the ferret's body. They don't have to be perfect. The circle on the right should be slightly larger. Ferrets have long bodies, so don't place the shapes too close together or your animal will appear too short.

Draw Ferret 2

Step 2: Draw another circle on the upper right side as a guide for the head. This circle should be smaller than the first two, and the edges should graze each other.

Draw Ferret 3

Step 3: Draw two intersecting lines inside the head to help you position the facial features later on.

Draw Ferret 4

Step 4: Draw a small circle on the lower half of the head as a guide for the muzzle.

Draw Ferret 5

Step 5: Draw four angled lines under the body (two below each circle) as guides for the legs. The line in the back angles forward more. Ferrets have short legs, so keep these lines relatively short.

Finish Up the "Skeleton"

Step 6: Draw a series of curved lines that connect the major shapes to form the body. Their torsos are very flexible, so make the middle connecting lines wavy. Draw a curved line on the left side as a guide for the tail.

Draw Ferret Initial Sketch

That's it for the initial setup! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Now Add Details

Draw Ferret 7

Step 7: Draw the eyes inside the head using the intersecting guidelines for placement. The eyes are small circles. The eye on the right should be slightly smaller due to perspective. Draw a tiny circle inside each eye for glare. Then draw a larger circle inside and shade it in for the pupil. Lightly shade the rest of the eye. Add a few short details around the eyes for extra definition.

Draw Ferret 8

Step 8: Draw the nose inside the muzzle using the lines and small circle as guides. Lightly sketch a rectangular shape first. Make the top curvier as you darken it. Bring the sides inward to create the nostrils. Add a splitting line at the bottom. Draw a few quick marks above the nose to represent fur.

Draw Ferret 9

Step 9: Use the small circle as a guide to draw the rest of the muzzle. Draw a line below the nose that splits in two to form the mouth. Define the sides of the muzzle using quick, short strokes for a fuzzy texture. Draw the chin using the bottom edge of the small guide circle as a reference.

Draw Ferret 10

Step 10: Draw a series of tiny dots inside the muzzle as a base for the whiskers. Using quick, long strokes, draw the whiskers extending outwards from those dots.

Stay Patient and Keep Drawing

Draw Ferret 11

Step 11: Draw the ears on top of the head. Lightly sketch two arcs at the top using the edges of the main circle as a reference. Once the shape looks right, darken the lines. Add a few quick, short strokes at the base for fur.

Draw Ferret 12

Step 12: Use the main circle as a guide to complete the rest of the head structure. Outline the top of the head using short strokes following the path of the circle. The bottom jaw drops down a bit lower than the bottom edge of the initial circle.

Draw Ferret 13

Step 13: Using the lines as guides, draw the front legs. Sketch lightly at first following the path of the guide line. Notice that the top of the leg is thick and gets thinner near the bottom. Darken the first leg using short strokes for a furry look, and draw the small paw at the bottom. Replicate the process for the leg on the other side, sketching the structure before finishing with short strokes and paws.

Draw Ferret 14

Step 14: Use the lines on the left as guides to build the hind legs. The upper portion of the hind leg is much larger and rounder. Follow the basic path of the guide line and sketch the foot. Darken the foot once the structure is accurate, and add the paws at the end. For the leg on the other side, only draw the visible portion since it is partially hidden.

Draw Ferret 15

Step 15: Darken the remaining lines to complete the rest of the body. Use quick, short strokes along the path of the guidelines to build up a realistic furry texture.

Draw Ferret 16

Step 16: Thicken up the line on the left using quick, short strokes to draw the bushy tail.

Now It's Time to Shade

Draw Ferret 17

Step 17 (optional): For a cleaner appearance, erase as much of the initial guidelines as possible. Don't worry about removing every mark perfectly. Re-darken any final lines you might have accidentally lightened while erasing.

Draw Ferret

Final Step (optional): Add shading to your drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick a direction for your light source so that your shadows stay consistent. Vary the pressure on your pencil to achieve different tonal values.

Add a cast shadow underneath to ground your drawing so it doesn't appear to float.

You can leave it unshaded for an albino look, or add value throughout for extra detail. Fill in tones using strokes that follow the general direction of the fur growth. Add a darker mask across the face for a classic look. Using a real photo for accuracy can be helpful.
