The Written step-by-step video tutorial:
For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.
Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the Gouldian finch's head. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. For a more detailed guide on the different ways to draw a circle check out this tutorial: Four simple ways to draw a circle.
Step 2: Inside, draw two intersecting lines that divide the circle evenly as guides to help you place the Gouldian finch's facial features later.
Step 3: On the left side of the bird's head, draw a small, angled line that's similar to a less-than sign (<) as a guide for the Gouldian finch's beak.
Step 4: Under the head, draw a big circle as a guide for the top part of the Gouldian finch's body. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle too. Draw the circle off to the right of the head a bit. Pay attention to the size of this circle in relation to the bird's head. Don't overlap the edges of the circles at the top.
Step 5: Make a small mark on the lower, right side for the first part of the guide for the lower part of the bird's body. Connect the mark to the big circle using long, curved lines to create a big arc. The height of this arc should be about the same as the diameter of the big circle.
