The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for the front part of the red fox's body. To draw the circle, make four marks to determine height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a bottle cap. Step 2: To the left, draw a slightly smaller circle using the four-marks method as a guide for the back portion of the body. Place this circle a bit higher than the first. Don't draw the circles too far apart or the red fox's body will be too long.

Step 3: On the top, right side, draw yet another circle as a guide for the head. The circle should be about half the size of the first circle. Don't place this circle too far away from the first circle or the fox's neck will be too long.

Step 4: On top of the head, draw a small, triangular shape as a guide for the red fox's ear. On the lower, right side of the head, make a small mark for the first part of the guide for the muzzle. Connect the mark to the head using longer lines to finish the arc-like guide for the muzzle.

Step 5: Under the first circle, draw a long, vertical line as a guide for the first front leg. Pay attention to how the line bends, as this will determine the red fox's leg joints and foot at the bottom. To the right, draw a line that slopes downward as a guide for the other front leg stepping forward.

Step 6: Under the second circle, draw another long, vertical line as a guide for the first hind leg. This line should bend near the middle for a joint and at the bottom for the foot. To the left, draw a line that slopes to the left before angling down as a guide for the red fox's other hind leg.

Step 7: Draw two long, sloping lines that connect the head to the body to create the guide for the neck. Connect the circles in the middle using two long lines to finish the guide for the torso. On the left side, draw a long, sloping line as a guide for the fox's tail.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 8: Inside the red fox's head, near the top of the muzzle, lightly sketch a small circle for the eyeball. When you get the size and position of the eyeball right, add an angled line on the left for the outer eye. The eye should be similar to a less-than sign (<). Darken the right edge of the eyeball. Draw a small, angled shape on the right side of the eyeball for the corner of the eye. Add a few short strokes to the right of the eye for a bit of fur. Inside the fox's eye, draw a thin slit for the pupil and a tiny circle for a highlight.

Step 9: Lightly sketch a small, curved line on the tip of the muzzle for the red fox's nose. Darken the tip of the muzzle for the outer nose. Inside the nose, draw an angled line for the nostril. Draw a series of short strokes along the initial curved line for the fur on the nose.

Step 10: Under the nose, draw a line that curves to the left for the mouth. Use short strokes for fur. The mouth should be parallel to the guide for the muzzle on the bottom, and it should stretch to the edge of the circle. Below the mouth, draw a line along the bottom edge of the initial arc for the lower jaw. The red fox's lower jaw should stretch all the way to the edge of the initial circle. Use short strokes for fur. At the top, darken the path of the initial arc to finish the shape of the fox's muzzle.

Step 11: Use the triangular shape on top of the head as a guide to draw the first ear. Darken the guide using short strokes for fur and make the top part rounder. Draw a line near the middle of the shape for the side of the fox's ear. Make the bottoms of the lines longer so that the base of the ear is inside the head. Draw a series of short strokes across the shape for the furry ear opening.

Step 12: To the right of the ear, draw a thin, triangular shape for the other ear. Draw a series of short strokes to the right of the shape for the fur inside the ear. Draw a series of short strokes along the edge of the initial circle for the top of the head. Under the ear, draw a Y-shaped line that's made up of short strokes for the lower base of the ear and side of the jaw. Draw short strokes along the bottom edge of the initial circle and to the left of the ears to finish the red fox's furry head. Add some rows of dots to the left of the nose for the base of the whiskers.

Step 13: Use the second line from the right as a guide to draw the first front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. Bend the shape near the top and near the middle for the joints. Angle the bottom forward for the paw. When you get the shape of the leg and paw right, darken the lines. As you darken the shape, use a few short strokes for the fur on the leg. On the tip of the paw, draw a couple of short, curved lines to separate the fox's toes.

Step 14: Use the line on the right as a guide to draw the other front leg the same way. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. This leg is stepping forward, so pay attention to how it bends at the top and how the paw droops downward. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Use a few short strokes for fur. At the bottom, draw a few short, U-shaped lines for the toes pointing downward. Add angled lines on the tips for the fox's nails. Inside the shape, above the toes, draw another short line for the dewclaw.

Step 15: Use the angled line to the left as a guide to draw the red fox's first hind leg. Draw this leg the same way as the front legs. Lightly sketch the shape of the leg around the guide. These legs should be wider at the top than the front legs. The bottom halves should angle forward. When you get the shape of the leg stepping forward right, darken the lines. Use a series of short strokes along the top part of the leg for fur. Draw a couple of curved lines on the paw for the fox's toes. On the tips of the toes, draw tiny angled lines for the nails.

Step 16: Use the angled line on the left as a guide to draw the other hind leg the same way. Lightly sketch the red fox's leg around the guide and only darken the lines when you get the shape right. Make the top part wide and pay attention to how the shape bends for the joints. The bottom half of the leg should be thin. Add a curved line on the tip of the paw for the toes.

Step 17: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the red fox's body. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial lines using short strokes to create the shape of the furry body. Lightly sketch the thick shape of the fluffy tail around the sloping line on the left. When you get the fox's tail right, darken the shape using a series of short strokes for the fur. The farther away from the guide that you draw the outer edges of the tail, the thicker and fluffier it will be.

Step 18: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.

Final Step: Color your red fox drawing! Use orange lightly for the base of the body. As you color, use strokes that go in the general direction of the fur. Lightly add a layer of orange but leave the underside of the fox's body and the bottom half of the head blank. Add more earth tones like light brown and red-orange to the body directly on top of each other. Add the colors lightly and slowly blend them to build up the reddish tones of the fur. Coloring in layers can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.

The lower half of the legs are darker than the body, so use brown and dark brown to color those areas. Use dark brown on the edges of the ears and on the nose. Leave a tiny section on the nose blank for shine. Add some brown and dark brown lightly to the red fox's body too so that the fur has more texture. Slowly push harder on your pencil to blend all the colors together. You can stop whenever you're satisfied with your drawing. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for a more accurate depiction of a red fox.

Use dark brown to add a few more strokes throughout the fox's body and emphasize the fur. Lightly use dark brown under the body and head to create shadows and give the figure more dimension. Use brown and orange to color the eye. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.

Using gray and brown, add a shadow under the body to ground the fox so that it doesn't appear to be floating.
