The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for the front part of the basset hound's body. To draw the circle, first make four marks to determine its height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: To the right, draw another circle the same way as a guide for the back part of the dog's body. This circle should be about two-thirds the size of the first circle. The tops of the circles should line up. Basset hounds have long bodies like dachshunds. Don't place the circles too close together, otherwise the body will be too short.

Step 3: On the top, left side, draw a circle as a guide for the dog's head. Make this circle around the same size as the second circle. The circle's edges should almost touch. If you place this circle too high up, the basset hound's neck will be too long.

Step 4: On the left side of the head, near the bottom, draw a curved line as a guide for the basset hound's muzzle. Make the sides of this guide flat, so that the shape almost looks like a small square.

Step 5: Inside the head, on the right side, draw two long, vertical lines as a guide for the ear. Make the left line slightly longer than the right line and close off the bottom. The shape should overlap the dog's body.

Step 6: Under the first circle, draw two vertical lines that bend at the bottom as a guide for the basset hound's front legs.

Step 7: Under the circle on the right, draw two longer lines that bend in the middle as guides for the dog's hind legs. Basset hounds have short legs, so make sure that all four lines for the legs are short in relation to the body.

Step 8: Draw two lines that connect the head to the body to create the guide for the neck. Don't overlap the ear. Draw two lines that connect the first two circles as the guide for the basset hound's torso. The bottom line should slope up on the right. On the top, right side, draw a curved, vertical line as a guide for the dog's tail.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 9: Inside the head, on the upper, left side, lightly sketch a small circle for the eye. When you get the size and position right, darken the shape but make the top part flatter for a droopier eye. Add a line at the bottom to make the basset hound's eye droopy. Inside the eye, draw a tiny dot for the pupil. Shade the dog's eye, except for a tiny circle that represents highlight. Use a value that's lighter than the pupil. Draw a series of short strokes above the eye for the furry brow. Draw a small line on the lower, left side for the corner of the eye. Add more strokes under the eye for fur.

Step 10: Near the tip of the muzzle, lightly sketch a small, triangular shape for the basset hound's nose. When you get the size and position right, darken the top line and make the sides curve down. On the left side, curve the line inward for the nostril. Make the line for the dog's nostril at the end thicker. Make the shape thinner at the bottom and draw a short, vertical line at the bottom.

Step 11: Under the dog's nose, draw a line that curves down and to the left for the mouth. Follow the path of the guide but make the shape smaller. Stretch the line in toward the circle. Under the mouth, on the right side, draw a couple of curved lines and short strokes for the basset hound's loose skin.

Step 12: Draw a vertical line to the left of the front of the muzzle for the other side of the muzzle. Darken the top part of the guide but make the line curvier to finish the basset hound's muzzle.

Step 13: Use the long shape on the right as a guide to draw the basset hound's droopy ear. Follow the path of the guide but make the shape curvier as you darken the lines. Inside the shape, on the left side, draw a long, curved line for the folded section of the dog's ear.

Step 14: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the dog's head. Darken the top part of the head but curve the left side more to create the thick brow. Make the top of the head flatter. Below the muzzle, draw a few curved lines for the loose skin on the throat. Under the throat, draw a long, curved line for the basset hound's other ear peeking from behind the head.

Step 15: Use the second line from the left as a guide to draw the first front leg. Lightly sketch the leg around the guide. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. On the lower, left side of the shape, draw a couple of curved lines for the dog's toes. At the end of the toes, draw the nails. The shape of the leg should be slightly wider at the top and narrow at the bottom before connecting to the paw. Add a series of short, curved lines within the shape of the basset hound's leg for the loose skin.

Step 16: Use the line on the left as a guide to draw the other front leg the same way. A big part of the leg will be blocked by the basset hound's body and first leg, so only draw the visible part at the bottom.

Step 17: Use the angled line on the far right as a guide to draw the basset hound's first hind leg. Lightly sketch the leg around the guide. Notice how the shape bends in the middle for the joint. Make the top part of the leg wider than the bottom. When you get the shape right, darken the lines. Use curved lines at the bottom for the toes. Draw the dog's nails on the tips of the toes as tiny triangular shapes. Add a few short, curved lines inside the leg for the wrinkles on the loose skin.

Step 18: Use the last line under the body as a guide to draw the basset hound's other hind leg the same way. The top part of this leg will be hidden behind the first hind leg, so only draw the visible lower half.

Step 19: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of the basset hound's body. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the body. Draw a few short, curved lines along the way for the wrinkles on the loose skin. Draw the shape of the dog's tail around the guide on the top, right side. Use short strokes for a furry texture.

Step 20: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Shade your basset hound drawing for more detail. Use a medium value on the dog's head and ears. Leave a thin strip on the forehead blank. Draw the outline of the pattern on the head and then shade it in. Shade lightly at first and slowly build up the value. Use a dark value on the nose but leave a strip blank for shine. Add some spots on the dog's muzzle. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. Draw big, random splotches on the body and then shade them in. Your pattern can look totally different from this one. It's a good idea to use reference as you draw for an accurate depiction of a basset hound. Add some shadows all over the basset hound using a slightly darker value to give the figure more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. Don't forget to pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. Add a cast shadow underneath to ground the dog so it doesn't appear to be floating.
