The Written step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the top part of the rainbow lorikeet's body. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. Step 2: On the top, left side, draw another circle using the four-marks method as a guide for the lorikeet's head. This circle should be about half the size of the first circle. The edges of the two circles should touch.

Step 3: Inside the head, draw two intersecting lines to help you place the rainbow lorikeet's facial features later.

Step 4: Draw two short, curved lines that connect the two circles to create the guide for the bird's neck. Add the guide for the lower part of the body by first making a small mark far down on the lower, right side. Connect the mark to the first circle using two long, curved lines to create a big arc for the lower half of the lorikeet's body.

Step 5: At the bottom of the arc, draw a line that slopes down to the left as a guide for the lorikeet's foot. Near the middle, draw a line that curves to the right for a toe. On the left add a similar line for the bird's other foot.

Step 6: Below the body, draw two long lines that meet at the bottom as a guide for the rainbow lorikeet's tail. The guide for the tail should be wide at the top and gradually get thinner at the bottom.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 7: Use the initial lines as guides to place a small circle inside the head for the rainbow lorikeet's eye. Inside the circle, off to the side, draw a tiny circle for highlight. In the middle, draw a big dot for the pupil. Draw short, curved lines above and below the eye for the eyelids. Draw a few more short lines on the sides of the eyes for the creases on this Australian parrot's exposed skin.

Step 8: On the left side of the circle, lightly sketch a short, curved line for the first part of the lorikeet's beak. Keep this line close to the head. When you get the placement and size right, darken it. Draw a second line that curves up toward the guide line inside the head for the bottom of the bird's beak.

Step 9: Above the beak, draw a short, curved line for the structure called the cere. Within the shape of the cere, draw a tiny circle for the lorikeet's nostril. Below the top beak, draw a short line that curves to the right for the bottom half of the bird's beak. Sketch lightly at first and then darken the line. Draw a series of short strokes along the right side for the feathery base.

Step 10: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the bird's head. Above the beak, draw a line that bulges out more than the edge of the circle for the front of the head. Below the beak, draw a line that curves inward more than the initial circle for the throat. Use a series of short strokes along the path of the circle on the right side for the feathery back of the head. Add a few more short strokes within the head and along the bottom edge of the circle for more detail on the rainbow lorikeet's feathers.

Step 11: Lightly sketch a very long, curved line along the right side of the entire body for the rainbow lorikeet's folded wing. When you get the shape and length of the line right, darken it. At the top, place the line farther away from the body and slowly curve it closer to the edge along the bottom. The tip of the wing at the bottom should stick out of the shape of the body a bit. Darken the right edge of the guide for the exterior of the folded wing. Curve the tip at the bottom a bit. Within the shape of the parrot's wing, draw a series of short, J-shaped lines for the pattern of the feathers.

Step 12: Draw the shape of the rainbow lorikeet's first foot around the short guide that's under the body and to the right. Curve the lines for the toes. At the top, draw a series of short strokes for the feathery base of the bird's leg. Add a curved, pointy shape on the tips of the toes for the nails. Add another toe on the left using a curved line.

Step 13: Use the line on the left as a guide to draw the other foot the same way. Draw the thin shape of the lorikeet's foot and toes around the guides. On the inside of the foot, draw another toe. Draw a short, pointy shape on the tip of the bird's toes for the nails. Add short strokes at the top for feathers.

Step 14: Use the initial shapes to create the rainbow lorikeet's body. Add some curved lines in the body for the feathers on the chest. Darken the outer edges of the guides on the right and on the left to add the shape of this Australian parrot's body. Step 15: Draw a couple of long lines along the bottom of the feet as a perch for the lorikeet to stand on. Don't overlap the bird's feet as you draw the perch. You can make the perch longer if you'd like.

Step 16: Draw a series of long, curved lines within the shape of the rainbow lorikeet's tail for the feathers located there. Darken the sides of the initial guide and don't overlap the shape of the perch.

Step 17: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.

Final Step: As their name implies, rainbow lorikeets are colorful, so color your drawing! Add the base color lightly at first. Use blue for the head and lower half of the body. Use yellow-green for a small section on the neck. Color the bird's wing and the tail green. Color the right edge of the chest yellow. Use orange for the rest of the chest, beak, eyes and a bit on the legs. Use gray for the feet. Gradually start to add darker versions of the base colors.

Use dark blue for the bird's head and bottom half of the body. Push a little harder on the pencil to blend the colors. Use dark green on the edges of the lorikeet's wing and tail feathers. Use dark red for the feathers on the chest and a bit for the beak. Use dark red for the eye too. Add orange and yellow on the top area of the beak to make it shiny. Add darker versions of all of the other the base colors. Use dark red for the chest and dark green for this Australian parrot's wing and tail. Coloring like this can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.

Use dark blue and a bit of purple to create feathers and shadows on the head and lower body. For an easier rainbow lorikeet drawing, you can skip the extra details and just add a solid color for each section. Add yellow-orange and yellow to the chest and slowly blend all the colors together. Use blue and purple for shadows on the chest. This helps emphasize the feathery texture. Use dark green on the edges of the bird's feathers on the wing and tail. Add some dark green on the entire shape of the wing and tail for shadows. Use a bit of dark blue and purple to emphasize the shadows on the lorikeet's wing and tail even more.

Add shadows to the feet and toes using gray. This gives the shapes more volume and dimension. Use gray, light brown, brown and dark brown for the perch. You can color yours differently if you'd like.
