Please PAUSE the "How to Draw a Fennec Fox" video after each step to draw at your own pace.





For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle as a guide for the fennec fox's head. The circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide.

Step 2: Draw two intersecting lines inside the head to help you place the fennec fox's facial features later on.

Step 3: Draw a small circle on the lower half of the head as a guide for the fennec fox's muzzle.

Step 4: Draw two pointed arcs on top of the head as guides for the ears. Fennec foxes have big ears, so make the arcs really big.

Step 5: Draw another circle on the left side as a guide for the back portion of the fennec fox's body. This circle should be a bit bigger than the head. Don't draw it too far away, otherwise the fox will end up too long.

Step 6: Draw two lines that connect the head and the circle to complete the guide for the fennec fox's body. Curve the lines as you connect them to give the body a rounder shape.

Step 7: Draw two lines under the fennec fox's body as guides for the legs that are on this side. The lines should be short. Bend them to indicate where the joints will be.

Step 8: Draw two more lines as guides for the legs on the other side and one for the fennec fox's tail. Bend the leg lines to indicate the joints and curve the line for the tail.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 9: Lightly sketch the eyes inside the head as circles and use the lines as guides for placement. Darken the shape of the fennec fox's eyes and make the sides pointier. The inner tips of the eyes should point toward the muzzle. Add a slit inside each eye and shade it in for the cat-like pupils. Shade the rest of the eyeballs except for a tiny circle to represent glare. When shading, use a value that's lighter than the pupils. Add a few small lines around the fox's eyes for extra detail.

Step 10: Add the fennec fox's nose near the middle of the muzzle by drawing two small dots as nostrils. Draw a wavy line above for the top part of the nose and a curved line below for the bottom part of the nose.

Step 11: Use the small circle as a guide to draw the rest of the fennec fox's muzzle. Use quick, short strokes for a furry look as you follow the basic path of the circle to create the mouth and chin. Add another set of quick, short strokes on the sides for the bottom of the head.

Step 12: Use a few longer strokes on the sides of the muzzle for the fennec fox's whiskers.

Step 13: Use the arcs on the head as guides to draw the fennec fox's ears. Follow the basic path of the arcs as you darken the lines for the ears. Make the tops rounder and the sides wider. Add another arc inside each ear to represent the inner structure. Use quick, short strokes inside the shapes for the furry texture.

Step 14: Use the original circle as a guide to draw the rest of the fennec fox's head. Use quick, short strokes as you follow the basic path of the circle and make the head a bit wider.

Step 15: Use the lines on the right side as guides to draw the fennec fox's front feet. Follow the basic path of the guide as you draw the shape of the first leg. Bend the leg at the joints and add a few curved lines at the bottom for the toes. Draw the other front leg the same way. Sketch the shape lightly at first to get the structure right. Darken the lines when you get the structure of the leg right. Bend the leg at the joints and add the lines at the bottom for the toes.

Step 16: Now use the lines on the left as guides to draw the fennec fox's hind legs using the same technique. Sketch lightly at first to get the structure right and only darken the lines when you get the shape right. The tops of the hind legs should be wider than the tops of the front legs. Use the other line to draw the hind leg on the other side the same way.

Step 17: Use the initial lines as guides to draw the rest of the fennec fox's body. Use quick, short strokes for a furry texture.

Step 18: Use the line on the left as a guide to draw the fennec fox's tail. The tail should be thick and come to a point at the bottom.

Step 19 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of them. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines that you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step (optional): Add some shading to your fennec fox drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value.

Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps ground the fennec fox so it doesn't appear to be floating.

You can add more value throughout your fennec fox drawing for more detail. Add a darker value on certain areas like above the eyes and on the sides of the muzzle. Fennec foxes have light-colored coats, so don't press down too hard with your pencil as you shade. Add the value by using strokes that go in the general direction of the fox's fur. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. It's always a good idea to use reference for a more accurate drawing.
