To draw Godzilla step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.
For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the top part of Godzilla's body. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. With every step, sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a circular object like a coin or a lid. For a more detailed guide on the different ways to draw a circle check out this tutorial: Four simple ways to draw a circle.

Step 2: On the lower, right, draw another circle the same way as a guide for the bottom half of Godzilla's body. Use the four-marks method to draw this circle too. This circle should be slightly bigger than the first one. Pay attention to the placement of this circle. Don't draw it directly under the first one. Place it off to the right.

Step 3: On the top, left, draw a circle that's about one-fourth the size of the first circle as a guide for Godzilla's head. The circles should be very close to each other, and they should all have a diagonal orientation.

Step 4: Draw a small, sideways arc to the left of the head as a guide for the top of this monster's muzzle. To draw the arc, make a small mark to the left of the head, and then connect the mark to the head using curved lines. Below that, draw a thinner arc that slopes down to the left a bit as a guide for Godzilla's lower jaw.

Step 5: Draw two lines that connect the head to the body as a guide for the neck. Draw two more lines that connect the first two circles together to complete the guide for Godzilla's body.

Step 6: Below the body, draw two long, vertical lines as guides for Godzilla's first leg. Close off the shape at the bottom. On the lower, left side, draw a small, angled line as a guide for the foot.

Step 7: On the lower, left side of this monster's body, draw a big, wide arc as a guide for the top of the other leg. Below the big arc, draw two more vertical lines for the lower part of the leg. Close off the shape at the bottom and draw a small, angled line on the left side for Godzilla's foot.

Step 8: Draw a U-shaped line on the right side of the first circle as a guide for the top part of Godzilla's first arm. Pay attention to the size of this arc. The bottom should stick out of the circle a bit. Below that, draw a long, narrow arc that slopes down to the left as a guide for the rest of the arm.

Step 9: To the left of the first circle, draw a short, curved line as a guide for the top part of the other arm. Below that, draw a long, narrow arc that slopes toward the left as a guide for the rest of the arm.

Step 10: To the right of Godzilla's body, draw a very long line as a guide for the top edge of the tail. Start the line on the left side of the second circle and then curve it up to almost the height of the head. You can also curve the line to the right instead of up. Just keep the line long because Godzilla has a big, long tail. Draw a second line below the first one as a guide for the lower part of the tail. Start this line on the leg so that the base of the tail is thick. The tip of this monster's tail should be thin and pointy.

That's it for the guides! From this point on, press harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing.

Step 11: Lightly sketch a small oval inside the big arc on the head, close to the edge of the circle. On the top edge of the eye, draw a couple of short, curved lines for Godzilla's thick brow. Darken the oval for the eye but make the sides pointier like a little football. Inside the eye, draw a couple of short lines for the visible part of the iris. In the middle of the eye, draw a dot for the pupil. Off to the side, if you have space, draw a tiny circle for highlight.

Step 12: Use the big arc as a guide to draw the top jaw. Follow the path of the guide to create the shape of Godzilla's muzzle but make the top part narrower. Make the bottom wavier and extend the line in toward the initial circle to make the mouth longer. Close to the top edge of the muzzle, draw two short lines for the nostril on this side of the head. Draw a series of short, V-shaped lines along the left edge of the mouth for the top row of teeth.

Step 13: Use the arc on the bottom as a guide to draw the lower jaw the same way. Draw a curved line across the arc toward the tip of the line on the top, right for the open mouth. Follow the bottom edge of the guide as you draw Godzilla's jaw but make the shape wavier. Curve the right side of the line up for the strong jaw muscles. Draw a series of small, triangular shapes along the line for the mouth for the row of lower teeth.

Step 14: Inside the mouth, on the right, draw a small, pointy shape for the tongue. Darken the arc for the other side of the mouth. Add more small, triangular shapes for the rest of Godzilla's teeth.

Step 15: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of Godzilla's head. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the head. As you darken the edges, use wavy lines for the bumpy texture on the head. Draw a couple of curved lines under the jaw for the creases on the neck. Add a few more curved lines inside the head to emphasize the cranial structure. Add a few short, angled lines for the rough, pointy texture on the skin.

Step 16: Use the arcs inside the body as guides to draw the first arm. Darken the outer edges of the arcs to create the shape of the arm. Draw a series of short, curved lines at the top of the arm for the folds of skin. Follow the path of the guides but make the shapes curvier to accentuate the muscles. Make the shape thinner close to the bottom for the wrist. Along the bottom edge of the guide, draw three thin, curved shapes with pointy tips for the fingers. Angle the lines to curve the fingers and create the joints. Don't make Godzilla's fingers too long. The thumb isn't visible from this angle.

Step 17: Use the shapes on the left side of the body as guide to draw Godzilla's other arm the same way. Darken the outer edges of the guides to create the shape of the arm. On the right side of the shape, below the wrist, draw a short, pointy shape for the thumb. Along the bottom of the guide, draw a short, curved, pointy shape for a finger. Draw a bit of the other fingers peeking from behind the first finger on the sides.

Step 18: Draw a long, curved line inside the lower part of the body for the top of the leg. The line should stretch from the top of the leg guide at the bottom to just below the arm. Draw a line along the lower, right edge of the initial circle for the bottom edge of the leg. Draw some lines near the middle of the shape for creases. Use initial lines to create the lower shape of the leg. Darken the angled line at the bottom for the first toe. At the tip, draw a small, triangular shape for Godzilla's claw. Add two more toes and claws to the right the same way. Draw a few curved lines inside the shape for creases.

Step 19: Use the shapes on the left as guides to draw the other leg the same way. Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of Godzilla's leg. At the bottom, draw the toes using a series of short, curved lines and the claws as small triangles. As you darken the lines for the leg, follow the guides but make the shape curvier for the muscles.

Step 20: Use the lines and shapes in the middle as guide to draw Godzilla's body. Follow the path of the guides and darken the outer edges to create the shape of the body. Don't overlap the arm that's on this side of the body as you draw the shape of the body. As you darken the lines along the guides, make the shape bumpier for the rough skin. The body should be narrow at the top and wide at the bottom. Draw a line inside the shape to separate the top and bottom parts of Godzilla's body.

Step 21: Use the long lines on the left as guides to draw Godzilla's tail. Simply darken the lines to create the shape of this monster's tail. Draw a curved line close to the bottom edge of the tail to separate the skin tones.

Step 22: Draw a row of angled, pointy shapes along the back and tail for Godzilla's plate-like spikes. Each individual shape should be flat on the sides and jagged and spiky at the top. The shapes don't have to look exactly like this. Yours can be different. Just make sure they're jagged at the top. Make the spikes near the head and the tip of the tail smaller than the ones in the middle. The increase and decrease in size of this monster's spikes should be gradual.

Step 23: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your Godzilla drawing to give the figure more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Shade lightly at first, and then gradually build up to the level of darkness that you like. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. For a more detailed guide on how to shade, check out this tutorial: How to shade.
Use a bit of rough shading on Godzilla's entire body to give the skin more texture. This type of shading consists of tiny scribbles to give the skin a rough texture. Use smoother strokes when shading the underside of the body and tail. Farther down the body, use longer strokes that contour to the shapes. Notice how the strokes wrap around the individual shapes like the arms and legs to give them a rounder look. As you shade, separate your strokes a bit so that the white of the paper comes through and creates a rough texture. If you make your strokes darker than your shadows, go back and add more value to your shadows. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.
Add some shading to the spikes to give them more volume as well. Use separated strokes inside the spikes and make the tips darker. Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps to ground Godzilla so he doesn't appear to be floating. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
