The following is a video tutorial where the steps are WRITTEN out within the video:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Draw two circles as a guide for the gray wolf's body. The circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides.

Step 2: Above that, draw a smaller circle with an arc next to it as a guide for the wolf's head.

Step 3: Draw a series of lines that connect all the shapes to form the wolf's body.

Step 4: Draw a line similar to the letter M on the head for the wolf's ears.

Step 5: Draw a curved line on the left of the body as a guide for the wolf's tail.

Step 6: Draw four bent lines below the body as guides for the wolf's legs.

Step 1: That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on press harder with your pencil for a more defined sketch.

Step 7: Draw the wolf's eye inside the top right side of the head. The eye consists of a shape similar to a football with a circle inside as the eyeball. Then draw an even smaller shaded circle inside that for the pupil.

Step 8: Draw the gray wolf's nose at the tip of the arc. The nose kind of resembles a triangle with rounded ends and a slit inside for the nostril.

Step 9: Using the initial shapes as guides, draw the ears. Simple go around the shape using quick, short strokes to represent the wolf's fluffy fur.

Step 10: Using the lines as guides, draw the rest of the head and muzzle. Again, just around the lines using quick, short strokes for the fur. The gray wolf's mouth stretches inside toward the circle, as does the chin below it.

Step 11: Use the lines as guides to draw the wolf's hind legs. Use quick, short strokes and make the leg thicker at the top. Bend the leg at the joints and draw the paws with small claws at the bottom. Do the same to the visible portion of the other hind leg. Don't forget the paws!

Step 12: Draw the wolf's front legs using the same technique. Use quick, short strokes that surround the guide line and bend the leg at the joints. Do the same thing to the visible portion of the other front leg.

Step 13: Draw the gray wolf's tail by using quick, short strokes that go around the guide line.

Step 14: Draw the rest of the wolf's body using the lines as guides. Slightly longer strokes throughout the body make a shaggy winter coat.

Step 15 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all the lines. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any of the final sketch lines that you accidentally erase.

Final Step (optional): Add some shading to your gray wolf drawing for more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. When shading, use strokes that have the same direction that the fur is supposed to have. Shading also helps define the structure of the body. Add a cast shadow underneath. This helps ground the wolf so it doesn't appear to be floating.

You can stop here for a white wolf or add more value throughout for a true gray wolf. It's always good to have reference when adding the patterns of the coat. Gray wolves are gray, so add a solid value to the entire body. Vary the pressure on your pencil when drawing to get different degrees of tonal value.
