For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Start by drawing two circles as guides for the Philippine eagle's head and top part of the body. The circle on the top, right will be the head. To draw each circle, first make four marks to determine the height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circles, just trace the outer rims of circular objects like coins or bottle caps. Step 2: Draw a horizontal line inside the head as a guide to help you position the facial features later. Connect the head to the body using short lines to create the guide for the eagle's neck. On the bottom, left side of the big circle, draw a long, curved line as a guide for the lower portion of the body. This guide should be similar to an upside-down arc. Pay attention to the size of this arc in relation to the first circle.

Step 3: On the right side of the head, draw a short, curved line as a guide for the Philippine eagle's beak. On the bottom, right side of the body, draw two short lines as guides for the feet. Under the feet, draw two curved lines that are similar to the letter C as guides for the toes. Under the body, draw a long, rectangular shape as a guide for the tail.

That's it for the guidelines! From this point on, press down harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a Philippine eagle.

Step 4: Inside the head, draw a small circle for the eagle's eye. Place the eye on top of the horizontal guide line. Add a couple of short lines around the shape for the corner's of the eye, the ridge above the eye and wrinkles. Inside the eye draw a tiny circle for a highlight and a small circle for the pupil. Shade in the pupil. Draw the beak along the path of the small arc on the right. Extend the shape downward to create the tip of the beak. Add a line from the tip of the beak along the bottom of the arc for the mouth. Add a ridge on the beak using a vertical line.

Step 5: Draw a couple of short curved lines on the left side of the beak to create the feather-y base. Add longer, angled lines along the outer edges of the initial guides to create the crest of feathers on the head. Make these lines different sizes. Curve the orientation of the lines so that the feathers are flatter on the back of the head.

Step 6: Draw a series of short, angled lines inside the head for the detail on the feathers. Curve the lines on the left side of the eye to separate the feathers from the bare skin. You don't have to draw every individual feather; just draw a few to give the head a feather-y texture.

Step 7: Use the small lines that are under the body and on the right side as guides to draw the Philippine eagle's foot and toes. Add a series of curved lines at the top for the feathers at the base of the leg. Draw the shape of the foot and toes around the guide lines. Draw three thin shapes pointing to the right for the front toes and a shorter shape pointing to the left for the backward pointing toe. At the tip each toe, draw a curved, pointy shape for the talons.

Step 8: Use the lines to the right as guides to draw the eagle's other foot and toes the same way. Draw the shapes around the guide lines. Not all the toes will be visible from this angle. This foot should be smaller because it's farther away. At the tip of each toe, draw a curved, pointy shape for the talons. Add a few curved lines at the top for some feathers.

Step 9: Draw a long, curved shape across the entire body for the eagle's folded wing. Make the middle of the shape wide and the ends more narrow. The bottom tip of the wing should be inside the shape of the tail. Add a few curved lines across the middle of the shape to separate the pattern of feathers.

Step 10: Darken the outer edges of the remaining guides to create the shape of the Philippine eagle's body. Make the shape of the tail a bit thinner than the initial guide lines. Add a few lines to the tail for the individual feathers. At the bottom, draw a few curved lines to give the bird a rock to perch on.

Step 11: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Shade your drawing for extra detail. Use a dark value to shade the folded wing and tail. Leave a few curved and straight lines blank for the individual feathers. Make the tips of the feathers on the head dark too. Use a medium value for the bare skin on the face, the base of the beak and the feet. Use a dark value for the tip of the beak and talons. Add a few strokes on the front part of the body for a bit of texture on the white feathers. Shade lightly at first and gradually build up to darker values. For light values, push down very lightly on your pencil and push down harder for darker values. Add a slightly darker value throughout the body to create shadows. Pick a light source as you shade so that the shadows are consistent across the body. Here the light source is coming from the top so most of the shadows will be on the underside of the shapes. It's a good idea to use reference as you shade for a more accurate depiction of a Philippine eagle. Shading can be time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks.
