For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

Step 1: Draw a circle as a guide for the top part of the budgie's body. The circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. Leave enough room at the top for the bird's head and at the bottom for the long tail.

Step 2: Draw an arc on the lower right side of the circle as a guide for the lower part of the budgie's body. The length of the arc should be a bit less than the width of the circle. Sketch lightly at first to get the shape of the arc right.

Step 3: Draw a smaller arc on top of the original circle as a guide for the budgie's head. The height of this arc should be a bit smaller than the width of the circle. The end result of the entire shape should be similar to a sausage.

Step 4: Inside the arc, draw two intersecting lines. These lines will help you place the parakeet's facial features later on.

Step 5: Draw a long line at the bottom as a guide for the budgie's tail. The longer the line, the longer the tail will be. The guides should look like a corn dog now!

Step 6: Draw a small C-shaped arc on the lower left side of the body as a guide for the parakeet's feet.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 7: Now draw the budgie's facial features. Draw the eye as a small circle inside the head. Use the initial lines as guides for placement. Draw a small dot inside the eye for the pupil and a tiny circle above it to represent glare. Add a wavy line around the eye for extra detail.

Step 8: Draw the top part of the parakeet's beak or cere to the left of the eye. The cere is somewhat triangular in shape. Sketch it lightly at first to get the structure right. Pay attention to the placement. Add a tiny line inside of it for the bird's nostril.

Step 9: Draw the beak under the cere using the initial lines as guides for placement. The budgie's beak is basically a curved triangle-like shape. Notice the position of it is entirely on the upper left side of the head. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the structure right. Draw a small line on the bottom right side as a the bottom part of the bird's beak.

Step 10: Use the arc as a guide to draw the budgie's head. Follow the basic path of the arc as you darken the line and create the head. Use quick, short strokes as you draw the head for a fluffier texture. Draw a few shapes in between the eye and beak for the bird's cheek and throat patches.

Step 11: Draw the budgie's folded wing inside the shape of the body. Use a series of curved lines that stretch down toward the outside of the body near the tail to form the wing. Remember to sketch lightly at first to get the structure right. Darken the lines that form the budgie's wing once you get the shape right. The folded wing basically consists of three curved lines on the left and a straight line on the right that meet at a point at the bottom.

Step 12: Draw a few curved lines within the shape of the budgie's wing to represent the budgie's secondary flight feathers. Draw a few more lines at the bottom for the bird's primary flight feathers.

Step 13: Use the C-shaped line at the bottom as a guide to draw the budgie's feet. Follow the path of the guide as you thicken up the feet using curved lines. Add a point at the tip for the talon.

Step 14: Use the initial lines as guides to draw the parakeet's body. Follow the basic path of the guides. Make the neck narrower and add a bit of a belly. Draw a few lines above the feet for the legs. Use quick, short strokes to represent the bird's fluffy feathers.

Step 15: Use the line at the bottom as a guide to draw the budgie's tail. Thicken up the shape of the tail as you follow the guide line. Draw a few small curved lines at the top of the budgie's wing for extra detail.

Step 16 (optional): Draw something under the budgie's feet so it doesn't appear to be floating. A few curved lines and jagged lines work well for a stick.

Step 17 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all the lines. It's okay to leave some behind. Also re-draw any final sketch lines that you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step (optional): Budgies are colorful, so instead of the usual shading, try coloring your drawing. Add some shading first using gray to give the drawing more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source to draw the shadows consistently. Shadows are generally at the cool end of the color spectrum, so add some blue or purple to the shadows. Male budgies usually have a blue cere and females a brown cere, so color yours depending on what you want. Use a bit of yellow, orange and light brown for the beak. Add more color to the cheek and throat patches depending on what variety of budgie you're going for. Add the lines on the head and body using black. Younger budgies have more lines near the forehead. Adding the lines can be very time-consuming, so be patient and take breaks. There are types of budgies that don't have these black markings, so you can leave yours blank if you'd like. Use reference or pause the video to draw the markings more accurately. Use some peach, brown and gray for the feet and stick under the feet.

Now add the brighter colors to your budgie drawing! There are different varieties of budgies, from green to blue to yellow and even a combination of colors! Color your budgie drawing however you'd like. If you want a more traditional, wild-looking budgie like this, use yellow on the head and green on the body. Use different shades of green (dark green, yellow-green, light green, etc.) to further shape the body. You can also vary the pressure on each pencil to get different shades of green. If you have a pet budgie, try to duplicate its pattern on your drawing. You can also come up with your own budgie variety and color your drawing something entirely new, like pink, red or black. Have fun with it!
