Please PAUSE the "How to Draw a Hammerhead Shark" video after each step to draw at your own pace.





For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw a rectangle with a diagonal orientation as a guide for the hammerhead shark's head. The size of the rectangle will determine the size of the head, so draw it accordingly. Leave room on the right side so you can draw the shark's body.

Step 2: Draw a long curved line as a guide for the top part of the hammerhead shark's body. The line should begin near the right side of the rectangle. The longer the line is, the longer the shark's body will be.

Step 3: Draw a second curved line under the first one as a guide for the bottom part of the hammerhead shark's body. This line should bend more than the first, and the two lines should meet on the right side.

Step 4: Draw two triangle-like shapes on the body as a guide for the hammerhead shark's pectoral fins. The fin on the left should be outside of the body, and the fin on the right should be inside the body.

Step 5: Draw another triangle-like shape on top of the hammerhead's body as a guide for the shark's dorsal fin.

Step 6: Draw a bigger triangle-like shape on the right side of the hammerhead shark's body for the tail or caudal fin. First draw a long, diagonal line on the right side, then connect that line to the body using two smaller diagonal lines.

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 7: Draw a circle on the right edge of the rectangle for the hammerhead shark's eye. Shade the inside of the eye except for a tiny circle to represent glare. Draw a few lines around the eye for extra detail. The other eye isn't visible because of the perspective.

Step 8: Use the rectangle as a guide to draw the hammerhead shark's head. Draw the top part of the shark's head first by lightly drawing a curved line as you follow the path of the rectangle. Darken the top part of the head when you get the curved structure right. Now draw the rest of the head. Follow the path of the guides as you lightly sketch the head. When you get the structure right, darken the lines.

Step 9: Draw the hammerhead shark's open mouth under the initial rectangle shape. The mouth consists of a wide, curved line on top of a straight line.

Step 10: Inside the hammerhead shark's mouth, draw many triangle-like shapes for the teeth. Follow the path of the mouth guide as you line the mouth with teeth. Draw more teeth in the spaces between the teeth to indicate the rows of teeth farther back in the mouth. Draw a small slit near the eye for the shark's nostril.

Step 11: Use the initial triangle-like shapes as guides to draw the hammerhead shark's dorsal and pectoral fins. Make the sides of the dorsal fin curve more for a more organic and less rigid feel. Darken the lines for the pectoral fins and make the ends rounder instead of pointy.

Step 12: Draw four more triangle-like shapes on the back part of the body for the rest of the hammerhead shark's fins. These fins should be smaller. Draw one on top for the second dorsal fin, two on the bottom for the pelvic fins and another for the anal fin.

Step 13: Use the long curved lines as guides to draw the hammerhead shark's body. Follow the path of the guides as you darken the lines that make up the body. Don't overlap all of the fins as you draw the lines for the body. Only overlap the fins behind the body. Draw a few curved lines above the pectoral fins for the shark's gills.

Step 14: Use the shape on the right as a guide to draw the hammerhead's caudal fin. Follow the basic path of the guide but make the fin thinner, especially in the middle section nearest to the sharks' body.

Step 15 (optional): For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines that you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step (optional): Add some shading to your hammerhead shark drawing to give it more dimension and volume. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Don't worry about shading too much if you're also going to add more value to your drawing.

You can add more value throughout your drawing for extra detail. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. It's a good idea to use reference for a more accurate drawing. When you add the value, try using smooth, even strokes for a sleek feel instead of a rough texture. You can leave a portion along the middle of the hammerhead shark's body unshaded for a shiny, wet look.
