To draw this bull step by step, follow along with the video tutorial below and pause the video after each step to draw at your own pace. You may find it easier to follow the step-by-step drawings below the video. The new lines in each step are shown in red, so you'll know exactly what to draw next. You may want to open the video in a new tab and use both drawing methods. Take your time and draw at your own pace.

Below you can watch a narrated step-by-step video tutorial:

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake.

How to Draw a Bull Charging Forward 1

Step 1: Draw a circle near the top-right side of your paper and a smaller circle below it. The second circle should be touching the larger one, not overlapping. These are guides for the bull's head and nose.

To draw circles, first make four small marks to indicate the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, trace the outer rim of a coin, a bottle cap or any other object with a circular edge. For a more detailed guide on the different ways to draw a circle check out this tutorial: Four simple ways to draw a circle.

Inside the larger circle, draw two slightly curved lines. One is horizontal in the bottom third of the circle. Closer to the right side, make a vertical line that is more curved at the top and then straightens out as it meets the bottom of the circle. These are construction lines that will help you place the bull's facial features later.

Step 2: Connect the two circles with a curved line on the left to create the bull's jaw, and a short vertical line on the right for the other side of the face. Just above the horizontal line you drew inside the large circle, draw two arcs for the ears. Above the ears, on top of the head, draw two lines as guides for the horns. Note how the line for the horn on the left has a loop.

Step 3: To the left, draw a big circular shape as a guide for the body. Don't overlap the head shapes as you draw the back portion of the body. Draw a half circle to the left of that, making this shape smaller than the first body circle. So your finished piece looks anatomically correct, pay close attention to your sketch in these early stages. Make sure to get the sizes at the correct proportions now.

Step 4: Draw two lines under the front of the bull's body and two more lines under the back portion of the body as guides for the legs. Bend the lines to indicate the joints on the legs. Note how long these leg guides are in relation to the body. On the left side of the body, draw a wavy line as a guide for the tail.

That's it for the guidelines! From this point on, press down harder with your pencil for a more defined drawing of a bull.

Step 5: Inside the top, left quandrant of the head circle, draw a small oval for the eye. Place the eye above the horizontal construction line. Make the sides of the eye pointy for the corners of the eye. Inside the eye, draw a tiny circle for a highlight and shade in a small section for the bull's pupil. Draw a few curved lines around the eye for the brow's structure and folds under the eye.

Now sketch in the bull's nose and muzzle. A wavy rectangle shape with some curved lines inside creates the nose. Shade in the nostrils. Some additional curved shapes create the sides of the muzzle and bottom lip.

Step 6: Now create the bull's horns using smooth lines. Draw around the guidelines and taper the horns up to a point at the tips. Note how the lines curve and do not overlap on the left side. Add some short strokes along the base of the horn on the left to indicate fur.

Step 7: Draw the rest of the bull's head and ears along the path of the initial guides. After making the round ears that are somewhat obscured by the horns, add some short strokes inside to indicate the inner ears. Make the strong jaw and add a flap of skin at the neck called a dewlap. As you complete the head, note how the lines aren't as smooth as the horns. This will make your final rendering look realistic.

Step 8: Use the lines under the front part of the body as guides to draw the front legs. Draw the legs around the guide lines. Sketch lightly at first and only darken the lines when you get the shapes right. Curve the outer edges of the legs to create the joints and muscle structure. At the bottom of each leg, draw a small sqaure-like shape for the hooves. Create the two digits visible on the foot on the left by making a small vertical line. Indicate some fur with very short strokes above these toes.

Step 9: Use the lines under the back portion of the body as guides to draw the bull's hind legs. Draw the legs around the guide lines, bending the shapes to indicate the joints. The curves you create with your pencil should make the legs look muscular. At the bottom, add the digits just as you did with the front foot.

Step 10: Use the remaining shapes and lines as guides to draw the rest of the bull's body. Create a tall, curved hump behind the head. Darken the outer edges of the circle guides to create the rest of the back. Make the underside of the body more wavy than the guides, and add a flap of skin between the front legs. Use the line on the left side of the body to draw the tail using curved strokes.

Step 11: For a cleaner look, erase as much as you can of the initial guide lines. Don't worry about erasing all of the guides. It's okay to leave some behind. Re-draw any final sketch lines you may have accidentally erased.

Final Step: Add some shading to your drawing for extra detail. Use a medium value for the main part of the body. Use a light value for the tops of the horns and where there is shine on the bull's coat. Add a slightly darker value across the body where there are shadows. Shadows will give the figure more dimension and volume. Use a dark value to shade the front and underside of the body. For a more detailed guide on how to shade, check out this tutorial: How to shade.

Shade very lightly at first, and then gradually build up to the level of darkness that you want. To create light values, push down very lightly on your pencil, then push down harder for darker values. Add a cast shadow at the bottom using a medium value. Shading can be a very slow process, so be patient and take breaks. Continue adding value a little at a time until you're happy with the result. It's always a good idea to use reference for a more accurate drawing. For a fun finishing touch, you can add a little puff of dust that the bull is kicking up as its running behind the back hoof!
