Please PAUSE the video after each step to draw at your own pace (scroll down to see the final Arabian horse drawing).

For the first few steps, don't press down too hard with your pencil. Use light, smooth strokes to begin.

Step 1: Draw two circles as a guide for the horse's body. The circles don't have to be perfect. They're just guides.

Step 2: Above that, draw a smaller circle with an arc next to it as a guide for the horse's head.

Step 3: Draw a series of lines that connect the main shapes to form the horse's body.

Step 4: Draw two small triangles that resemble the letter M on top of the head as guides for the horse's ears.

Step 5: Draw a curved line on the left side of the body for the horse's tail.

Step 6: Draw four curved lines below the body as guides for the horse's legs. Draw the lines as long as you want. The longer the lines, the taller the horse. Short lines make a pony!

That's it for the initial sketch. From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined sketch.

Step 7: Draw the horse's eye inside the head on the upper right side of the circle. The horse's eye is basically the shape of a football with a shaded circle inside. Draw a line above it for the eyelid.

Step 8: Draw the horse's nostril on the tip of the muzzle as a shaded oval with some lines around it.

Step 9: Use the curvature of the initial shape as a guide to draw the rest of the horse's muzzle. The mouth is a line below the nose, and the chin is a curved line below the horse's mouth.

Step 10: Draw the horse's ears with more detail using the initial shapes as guides.

Step 11: Using quick, short strokes, draw a few hairs in between the ears for the top of the horse's mane.

Step 12: Draw the rest of the horse's head using the initial lines as guides. Draw a curve at the bottom for a pronounced jaw.

Step 13: Use long strokes to draw the horse's mane draping over the neck. Draw the horse's mane as short or as long as you like, but always keep the shape of the neck in mind. Darken the horse's neck in this step as well.

Step 14: Draw the horse's front legs using the lines as guides. As you draw around the line, bulge it in and out at the joints and at the bottom where the horse's hoof is. Draw a line to indicate the hoof, then draw the leg that's hiding behind using the same technique.

Step 15: Draw the hind legs the same basic way as the front, except these are thicker at the top. They also bend back more at the hock joint. Draw the horse's other leg the same way but only the portion that is visible.

Step 16: Draw the horse's tail using quick, short strokes to simulate the flow of the hair. Just like with the mane, you can draw the horse's tail as long or as short as you want.

Step 17: Use the remaining lines as guides to draw the rest of the body.

Step 18 (optional): You can stop here for a sketchy look or erase as much as you can of the initial guides for a cleaner look. Don't worry about erasing all the guide lines. It's okay to leave some behind.

Step 19 (optional): Add some shading to give your Arabian horse drawing more structure, dimension and volume. Vary the pressure on your pencil to get different degrees of tonal value. You can leave part of the horse's mane unshaded for a nice-looking sheen. Pick the direction of the light source when shading so that the shadows are consistent with it. Shading helps to give your horse drawing more skeletal and muscular structure. It's always a good idea to have reference available to get the horse's anatomy as accurate as possible.

Step 20 (optional): You can add value throughout your horse drawing for extra detail. You can add a solid value like this or draw spots or patches, even stripes! Draw a horn over the head to make a unicorn! Or wings for a pegasus! Have fun with it! If your horse isn't flying, add a cast shadow underneath the horse to ground it.
